Congratulations on your
Cobalt RaQ Dedicated Server! You are now ready to
begin enjoying the power and benefits of full control
over your own Web server for your virtual Web
sites.
The following guide will
help you walk through the critical first steps to get
your Cobalt RaQ Dedicated Server up and running.
Once these are complete, you will be on your way to
building a better web-hosting business.
Please follow along with
these step-by-step instructions to set up your
server. Once you are done, if you have additional
questions, please contact AlwaysOnline.net Technical
Support at 800-699-9748, or fill out the online Technical Support
Form.
Step One:
Administration Interface Control
Panel
Visit your new server and
login to the Administration Interface. To access
the Administration Interface, type your server's IP
address in your web browser's address box. This
should look something like this:
http://100.100.100.100/admin/
Use the username and
password you were supplied. If you did not receive
your username and password, please contact your Account
Manager.
Step Two:
Domain Name Service
Domain Name Service (DNS)
translate computer network addresses into human-readable
names without the user having to know the numeric
addresses. In other words, DNS turns
100.100.100.100 into
www.website_name.com. For more information
about DNS and Internet domain name translation, please
visit the following external link: http://www.dns.net/dnsrd/docs/whatis.html
By default, we configure
all customers to run their own DNS on their
Cobalt. This is one of the great benefits of
having your own dedicated server as you can fully
control how and when the rest of the world views the
sites on your server. You will still need to
configure your server with the appropriate domain name
and DNS settings before your server can become a fully
functioning DNS server.
If you need assistance in
the initial configuration or setup of DNS on your
server, please reference one of the following links
below (depending on the server model you are
running):
-
RaQ2 servers - http://www.cobalt.com/support/wp.dns.html This
page was created by Cobalt as a step-by-step getting
started guide for setting up DNS services on a RaQ
server.
-
RaQ3 and RaQ4 servers - dns.raq3setup.pdf This PDF file (requires Adobe
Acrobat reader plug-in) is an updated version of the
RaQ2 document with excellent step-by-step instructions
and illustrations on where to make the appropriate
menu setting changes.
Before your server can
become a fully functional DNS server, you must register
your server with InterNIC as a primary DNS server.
This will allow your server to function properly and be
listed properly on the InterNIC and Internet root name
server system.
Note: Remember the IP
addresses referenced on that page. You will need
to use them to register
your DNS servers with InterNIC and when you register
domains with InterNIC.
Step Three:
Register your DNS servers with
InterNIC
InterNIC is the global
clearinghouse for domain names. They are the
organization that lets the rest of the world know which
domain name server to look to when a URL is typed into a
browser. You have to register your DNS server with
InterNIC so they will know you exist and can allow
Internet-wide access to your DNS information.
To register your DNS
server, go to the URL: http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/makechanges/itts/host
You will see a form like
the one below. Simply fill in the required
information. Click the blue links next to each
corresponding form field if you need help with that
item.
Step Four: Add
domain names to your server.
--> |
Step-by-step
Instructions for Adding Domains To Your Server:
-
Enter one of your IP
numbers in the IP Address Field.
-
Enter your Hostname. This is most likely WWW.
-
Enter the domain name. If this is a new
domain name, you will need to register it with
InterNIC.
-
Select whether you want this domain to accept
e-mail for the domain. NOTE: RaQ4 servers differ
slightly form this step. Instead of "Accept
E-mail for Domain" the RaQ4 interface features a new
field named "E-mail Server Aliases" where you must
specify the mail alias for your new domain/site (ex.
"mail.new_site.com").
-
Fill in the "Maximum Allowed Disk Space" and the
"Maximum Numbers of
Users". NOTE: Make certain
that you set the values for maximum number of
users and maximum allowed disk space high
enough. This is very difficult to change
later.
-
Fill out the rest of the form based on your
preferences.
-
Click . You
will see a window like this:
- Click on the
icon. This will
give you:
- Click on
and
you will see:

If this user is a site
admin, they can login to the Site Management interface
by going to:
http://www.newsite.com/siteadmin
This user is now set up and can begin FTP'ing
content to his folder. If this user is a site admin,
they can FTP content to their folder and to the main
"root-web" (also referenced as "/web" in the directory
structure). The path on the serer, for
administrative users using FTP to publish to more than
one site, will find the web document root directory
in: /home/sties/new_site.com/web
Individual User Sites
A user with userid "tuser" on domain
newsite.com would have the following URL:
http://www.newsite.com/~tuser
That address would be their home page.
This is the place that the user FTPs into by
default. If this is a site admin, he may also be
able to go up to the root directory. Using
WS_FTP this would be done by clicking on the "up
arrow" twice. This is where the root web is
located which would post content to
"http://www.new_site.com"
Step Five:
Registering New Domains with InterNIC (or some other
Registrar)
You will need to make sure that InterNIC (or some
other International registrar for non .com, .org,
and .net domains) is properly notified when
you register a domain.
When you are filling out the registration form, you
will need to list the proper IP addresses and server
names. These should correspond with the Primary
and Secondary DNS servers you have listed for your RaQ
(from #1 above).
That information
will be filled into a form like:
This can be accessed from
Network Solutions (InterNic) at http://www.networksolutions.com/purchase/
NOTE: If you are doing your own DNS, you need to
put your own server's domain name and IP address (and
have registered it with InterNIC as a primary DNS
server). If you're using RaqShaq as a primary
or secondary nameserver, you should specify: DNS
server hostname:
atlns01.webhosting.RaqShaq.com DNS server
netaddress: 209.196.32.34
Step Six: Finding Additional Help and
Information
After you've successfully
configured your virtual Web sites on your RaQ server,
you'll need to publish or transfer your Web content to
the new site location. If you have problems with
managing DNS, Email services or receiving messages to
the right domain name, configuring applications or SSL
(secure) Web server services, please see our FAQ section
This
site is continually updated with the most current
information, processes, tips and tricks that we have
come up with to enhance or ease the process of running
and maintaining a Cobalt RaQ
server.
